Just A Note On Stop Lights
Q. What should motorcyclists do when they come to a traffic light and the bike doesn't trigger the traffic light? It happens all the time around the West End during later hours when other cars aren't around. - Manh N.
A. Many lights are triggered by sensors called "inductive loop detectors," said Jenni Smith of the Virginia Department of Transportation. The sensors have trouble detecting some motorcycles, especially sporty models with less metal. The detectors can be adjusted. Contact the local city or county. For state-maintained routes, call VDOT at (800) 367-ROAD (7623) and say the word "coordinator" when all that voice-menu stuff starts up.
But that's no help while you're sitting there. Are you allowed
to just check for clear traffic and then go? No. "The failure of the light to
change is not a license to ignore it," said Lambert of the state police. So, what
to do? I suggest learning how to recognize unmarked squad cars.
